A fabric importer has over 1000 lines of fabric in theircatalogue at any one time. Sampling represents a high overhead and beingable to locate the samples is a constant problem. In this case theSamples were taken from fabrics that cost between $200 and $2000 perMetre.

It would be unusual to put a small business into an ERP systemsuch as ADempiere but because the value of the samples was so high andthe location of the most recent borrower of the sample was so importantit was though justified. The trick was to make it as simple as possibleto use.

No one within the organization had experience of using any kindof transaction processing let alone ERP systems. There were over 4000samples of which half were on loan at any one time.

What was needed was a “Video Rental” system with refinements.

McBoss stripped down ADempiere over PostgreSQL. Simplified theMenus and added some function that used the bones of existingtransactions and Document types but assumed come fields at defaultvalues.
